Sailfish Fall to Fighting Knights

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team began its stint of five-straight road matches on Tuesday night when it traveled to face Palm Beach County rival, Lynn.

The Sailfish looked to get revenge against the Fighting Knights (9-7, 6-3 SSC) who swept PBA (8-9, 4-5 SSC) in their first match on Sept. 18. Things looked bright for the 'Fish after PBA took the first set, but the hosts regrouped, taking the following three sets to win the match 3-1. The loss snapped PBA's three-match winning streak. The 'Fish still lead the DII-era series against Lynn, 12-11.

Amber Rowoldt led PBA with 11 kills with six digs and three blocks. Jazz Schmidt finished with a triple-double, totaling 13 assists, 13 digs, and 10 kills. Libero Ally Smith finished with a team-high 15 digs. Alyssa Avitia tied Schmidt for a team-leading 13 assists. Alyse Cundiff added six kills and seven digs. Anna Gregerson and Mary Morgan Formby finished with five kills each. Gregerson led the 'Fish with six blocks.

The first set consisted of 13 ties and six lead changes. With the set tied at 11, PBA tried to pull away with a 4-0 run with kills from Formby and Rowoldt coupled with two Lynn attack errors. Lynn battled back with an 8-2 run to take a 20-17 lead. Coming out of a timeout, the Sailfish rattled off three straight points with a kill by Formby, and a block by Formby and Gregerson to tie it at 20. The Sailfish found themselves trailing 22-20 before ending the set on a 5-1 run with a trio of kills from Rowoldt, an ace from Smith, and a solo block from Maddy Hooper. PBA took a 1-0 lead after taking the set, 25-23.

The Sailfish tried to carry their momentum in the second set, starting with an 8-5 lead. The Fighting Knights retook the lead by taking advantage of a ball-handling error and set error from the 'Fish to take a 12-11 lead. The Sailfish remained within striking distance but failed to string enough points together to retake the lead, despite hitting their match-best, .176 in the set. Lynn held off PBA to win the second set, 25-22.

Lynn took a quick 11-6 lead in the third set after a pair of attack errors by the 'Fish. PBA chipped away at the lead throughout the set. PBA trailed 21-15 before catching a break with four unforced errors by the hosts along with a pair of blocks by the 'Fish to eventually tie the set at 22. Unfortunately for PBA, it couldn't complete its comeback as Lynn ended the set on a 3-0 run, winning it 25-22.

PBA was unable to stay alive in the fourth set. Lynn took an early 4-3 lead and never looked back for the rest of the set. The Fighting Knights won the fourth, 25-17, and won the match, 3-1.

The Sailfish defense held Lynn's attack to just a .138 hitting percentage. Both teams matched each other with 11 blocks each.

The 'Fish travel to the west side of the sunshine state this weekend with matches against Saint Leo and Eckerd. PBA starts with a matchup against the Lions on Friday night before facing the Tritons on Saturday afternoon.
