Sailfish Withstand Early Barrage To Defeat Tritons

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Palm Beach Atlantic baseball came out on top against Eckerd College in the two teams fifth meeting of the season. The Sailfish (9-8, 1-2 SSC) were down big early but persevered and were able to defeat the Tritons (8-10, 3-3 SSC) by a final score of 10-7.

The Tritons came out hot in the first inning scoring six runs on three hits to jump out in front 6-0. Nevertheless, the Sailfish would not be phased as they chipped away at the Tritons lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first thanks to an Andreas Papageorge double to center field that brought home Sean Houck

The Sailfish added six more runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 7-6. The big inning got started on a Tritons miscue as Robert Fabelo had a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. The Tritons pitchers then walked four batters in a row allowing two runs to come home for the Sailfish. With bases loaded, Houck singled to center scoring two more 'Fish to put the score at 6-5. Brandon Smith decided that was not enough as he singled through the left side of the infield to plate Brandon Seltzer from second base. After PBA loaded the bases again, Fabelo collected his second hit of the inning to cap off the Sailfish scoring by bringing Smith home to make it a 7-6 ballgame.

PBA would score one run in the fourth, the fifth and the sixth to extend their advantage to 10-6. Before a solo homer in the ninth, the Tritons were unable to score for seven innings thanks to the work of Frankie Fernandez and Lance Fry. Fernandez pitched 2.2 innings in relief giving up only two hits and no runs. His performance earned him the win to put his record at 1-1 on the season. Fry replaced Fernandez at the start of the fourth inning and went on to throw 5.0 innings of shut-out baseball allowing five hits while striking out six.

For the sixth straight game the Sailfish offense out-hit their opponents. The 'Fish had 12 hits in the game which included three doubles coming off the bats of Seltzer, Papageorge, and Louis Zayas. Five 'Fish had two-hit games and three 'Fish had two-RBI games as well. Seltzer and Houck each had two hits and two RBIs.

The Sailfish will be back on the diamond next Friday, March 13 as they return home to host Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park. First pitch against the Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m.
