Sailfish Sweep Season Series Over Fighting Knights With Comeback Victory

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team traveled south to take on SSC rival Lynn tonight. The Sailfish looked to complete the series sweep over the Fighting Knights as PBA was victorious in the previous matchup 68-65. The Sailfish defense locked down Lynn over the final five minutes to capture the victory in the closing seconds with a defensive stand and win 60-59. 

The Sailfish honored seniors by starting five in their final road games of their PBA careers, but it was Avree Carpenter who provided the offensive spark off the bench with eight first-quarter points. She was able to get to the basket at will against the Knights and shot 4-of-5 in the quarter. Aniyah Ross was perfect from the floor, adding four points as the Sailfish trailed 16-14 after the first ten minutes of play where PBA shot 60 percent from the field.

The Sailfish offense cooled down in the second quarter scoring nine points on 4-of-13 shooting from the floor. Lynn's Sarah Baer made her presence felt in the paint as she scored six points in the second quarter. PBA struggled with turnovers in the first-half committing 13 which led the Fighting Knights to finish with 20 points off turnovers in the contest. The two sides went into the halftime locker room with Lynn holding the halftime led 29-23. 

The Sailfish came out of the half with a balanced attack offensively as six players made field goals in the quarter led by Ross and Ciara Cumbie who each scored four points. PBA was 8-of-15 from the floor in the third quarter and outscored the Fighting Knights 18-17. The 'Fish were within striking distance, down five, heading to the fourth quarter. 

The Sailfish played their best quarter of the game on both sides of the floor in the fourth quarter when it was needed most. Sia Williams exploded offensively with 11 points in the fourth on 4-of-6 shooting and 2-of-3 from behind the arc. She finished with a game-high 17 as she was one of three other Sailfish to score in double-figures along with Avree Carpenter and Aniyah Ross who scored 13 and 10 points respectively. 

The stayed within four points in the final five minutes, and it appeared like the Sailfish were leaving to many points on the floor as they started the fourth quarter 0-of-7 from the free-throw line. However, the Sailfish defense was able to hold Lynn without a basket the final five minutes of game action. The 'Fish were down four when Sia Williams knocked down a three out of Manisha Redus timeout to cut the lead to one with eleven seconds remaining. Claire Bady came up with a steal on the following inbound pass and was able to draw a foul with five seconds left. After starting the quarter 0-of-4 from the line, the senior stepped up to the line to and buried the two pressure free-throws to give the 'Fish a one-point advantage. PBA was able to get a stop on the final possession as Lynn wasn't able to knock down two shots in the paint in the closing seconds.

The Sailfish shot 48 percent from the field, 25-of-52 in the game and finished 4-of-9 from three. Lynn was led by Kevyn McKae and Trinity Edwards who each finished with 13 points. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, finishing under 60 percent from the game but the Sailfish were able to hit two big ones when it counted and secured the one-point victory.

The Sailfish return home this Saturday when they face Florida Southern in their final game of the season and celebrate six seniors.
