Sailfish Drop Senior Night Game Against Mocs

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team faced off with Florida Southern today at Rubin Arena trying to close out their 2019-20 season with back-to-back victories in the SSC. The Sailfish struggled against Southern's pressure defense and fell 68-41.

The Sailfish honored their senior class with a pregame ceremony that recognized six PBA players appearing in their final game for the program. Seniors Ciara Cumbie, Aniyah Ross, Claudia Charles, Claire Bady, and Caroline Patrick started the game for the Sailfish with Taylor Laabs being the first player off the bench for the 'Fish. After scoring the first basket of the game, FSC answered with a 13-0 run of their own to take control of the game. The Mocs controlled the pace and dictated the play with their physical pressure which caused 32 Sailfish turnovers which they turned into 28 points.

Ciara Cumbie was the best Sailfish player on the floor throughout the contest. In her final game, the senior forward scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, pulled down nine rebounds and recorded four steals. The Sailfish had nine different players score in the game but outside of Cumbie, their leading scorer was England Bennett who finished with six points. PBA was strong on the boards outrebounding the Mocs and pulling down 13 offensive rebounds.

Overall, the Sailfish were 15-of-52 from the floor, 29 percent while FSC shot 44 percent, 29-of-65. The Moccasins knocked down seven threes in the game while PBA was 4-of-14 from behind the arc. The Mocs had four players score in double-figures led by Mackenzie Steele's 17 points. The 'Fish outscored the Mocs from the line 7-3, but the difference in the game was the PBA turnovers that allowed FSC to take 13 more shots than the Sailfish despite losing the rebounding battle.

The Sailfish season ends with a 4-23 record after the defeat and the Mocs improve to 18-10 and will be the three seed in the SSC tournament. The Sailfish will have an overturned roster next season after the six seniors finished their PBA basketball careers today.
