WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team traveled to face off with SSC opponent Rollins this afternoon. The Tars jumped out to an early lead and held off PBA attacks to win 69-50.
The two teams played down to the wire in the previous matchup at Rubin Arena in West Palm Beach, but the Sailfish came up on the short end 64-60. In today's matchup, the 'Fish started off cold from the field and in contrast, Rollins made 4-of-5 from three to take an 18-6 lead after the first quarter.
Claire Bady was aggressive offensively in the first half leading PBA in scoring with five points while
Ciara Cumbie added four points of her own. It was a pleasant sight for the Sailfish to see Cumbie back fully in game action as she recovers from an injury that kept her out against Barry and Saint Leo. PBA shot 27 percent from the floor in the first half and hit 3-of-13 shots from three. The Tars were led by Rachel Lia who scored seven points and dished out four assists while Rachel Jablonski scored all of her eight points in the first half. The Tars were a staggering 7-of-12 from deep in the first half and held the led at the break.
The Sailfish continued to battle out of the halftime locker room and came out and won the second half. PBA hit 36 percent of their shots in the second half and defensively held Rollins to 18 percent lower than their first-half percentage.
Victoria Self and
Claudia Charles brought strong performances off the bench in the second 20 minutes as Self was 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and led PBA with nine points.
Claudia Charles was a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor and finished with eight points. Cumbie and
Sia Williams finished with eight and seven points respectively as the Sailfish tried to battle back from the Tars hot shooting start.
Rollins was able to build their lead by turning PBA over 20 times that led to 29 points off of turnovers for the Tars. PBA won the rebounding battle 35-33, led by
Aniyah Ross who pulled down nine rebounds after breaking double-digit rebounds in the two previous games. Rollins was moving the ball well offensively and had an impressive 21 assists on their 25 made field goals.
Up next, the Sailfish will look for a season sweep over rivals Lynn as they travel to Boca Raton on March 4. The 'Fish defeated the Fighting Knights 68-65 earlier this season and the Knights currently carry a 12-13 record.
