Sailfish Fall to Lions on the Road

ST. LEO, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team traveled to face Sunshine State Conference foe Saint Leo tonight. The Sailfish drop to 2-10 on the season after falling 76-52 against the Lions who improve to 6-8. PBA has lost its last two SSC games since defeating Johnson on Dec. 16.

The Sailfish came out of the gates strong with an early 6-0 run. Avree Carpenter led the 'Fish in scoring early scoring six of her eight points, but PBA trailed 16-13 after the first quarter. The Sailfish struggled shooting after their initial run, closing the quarter going 1-of-9 from the floor.

The deficit grew in the second quarter as Saint Leo outscored PBA 21-10. The 'Fish were unable to contain the Lions offense as they shot 54 percent in the second quarter and were 13-of-27 from the floor in the first half. Saint Leo was able to hit on five three's while PBA was held to one make on six attempts. The Sailfish were led by Carpenter's eight points while Saint Leo's Alani Gallagher scored nine. PBA went into the halftime break trailing 36-23.

The Sailfish remained within striking distance for much of the third quarter before a late quarter Saint Leo run took the lead to over 20. Sia Williams came to life in the second half for the Sailfish scoring seven of her team-high eleven points. Kennedi Rodgers scored seven of her nine in the second half and pulled down six rebounds. Taylor Race and England Bennett each scored six points off of the bench in the fourth quarter, but the Sailfish were outscored in the third and fourth quarter leading to the 76-52 defeat.

PBA was held to 33 percent from the floor for the game while the Lions shot 49 percent. The Sailfish have struggled to score in SSC games so far this season as they have failed to eclipse 60 points in five conference games played this year.

The 'Fish will return to action next week when they host Barry on Wednesday and Rollins on Saturday at Rubin Arena.
