WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team squared off with the Florida Tech Panthers for the second time this season. After falling 64-60 in Melbourne early this season, the Fish were defeated tonight 77-50. The Sailfish fall to 3-16 with the defeat while the Panthers improve to 9-11.
After defeating Lynn in their last home contest, the Sailfish were unable to return to that high level of play tonight as they struggled on both ends of the floor against the Panthers.
Claire Bady got off to an aggressive start from the floor scoring two driving layups inside of the first two minutes and led the Sailfish in scoring with seven points in the first quarter. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, outside of Bady the team was 3-of-12 from the field and scored just seven points collectively. The Panthers also got off to a slow start from the floor as well but carried an 18-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Sailfish struggled overall shooting 6-of-17 in the second quarter but they received a spark from
Victoria Self in the second quarter. Self scored seven points in the first half on 3-of-5 shooting to keep the Sailfish within striking distance. PBA out rebounded the Panthers 27-20 in the first half but only scored one second-chance point in the half. The Sailfish did enough defensively to limit the Panthers to 33 points in the first half but were able to score only 28 points of their own in the first 20 minutes. The Sailfish made one more field goal in the first half, 12 to the Panther's 11, but were outscored by six from behind the arc and five points from the free-throw line.
The Sailfish were still in the game coming out of the half down by five, but the Sailfish second-half woes continued tonight as they were outscored 44-22 over the final 20 minutes. Coach
Manisha Redus went deep into the Sailfish bench looking for a spark in the second half as Florida Tech started the third quarter on a quick 6-0 run. Reserve players
Mackenzie Dickey and
Taylor Laabs entered the game early in the quarter and contributed six and five points respectively. The Sailfish shot just 26 percent in the second half, while the Panthers began to make some of the open shots they missed in the first half. The Panthers were 14-29 from the field in the second half 4-of-10 from three.
Victoria Self was the lone player to reach double-digits while leading the Sailfish in scoring with ten points. Four Panthers scored double figures led by November Morton's 22 points. Sailfish leading scorers
Sia Williams and
Avree Carpenter combined four just five points, shooting a combined 2-for-20. The Sailfish didn't help their cause offensively by committing 19 turnovers leading to 14 second chance points for the Panthers.
The Sailfish have an off day this Saturday before hosting Embry-Riddle on Feb. 5 at Rubin Arena. The Sailfish lost to the Eagles 73-37 in their matchup in Daytona Beach earlier this season.
