LAKELAND. Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball defeated Florida Southern 7-2 on Wednesday, as the teams opened up a three-game set earlier in the week than normal due to a poor weather forecast for Friday. PBA improves to 20-19 with the win and 10-12 in SSC play while FSC falls to 20-18 with the loss and 6-13 in league play.
Florida Southern took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Collin Camarigg struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitch and later came around to score on a two-out double.
The Sailfish loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the fifth before Sean Houck singled through the left side to tie the game at one. Danny Tufariello followed with a automatic double to left center that scored two runs to give the 'Fish a 3-1 lead. PBA added another run as Brandon Smith came up with a two-out infield single. Tufariello also came around to score with two outs on a wild pitch as the 'Fish closed out a five-run fifth inning.
Sailfish starter Matt Leslie ran into some trouble in the bottom half of the fifth as he allowed two one-out singles but got Pablo Cabrera to hit into a double play to end the Moccasin threat. PBA added a run in the sixth to go ahead 6-1 as Florida Southern threw a bunt away allowing Marcos Perez to come around and score.
Leslie (Win, 2-1) ended his day after five strong innings, as the righty allowed just four hits and one run while striking out six hitters. Heath Hawkins entered in the sixth, and allowed the first three hitters he faced to reach base with no outs, but was able to escape the jam with a strikeout and a couple of popups without allowing a run.
Perez singled to lead off the eighth inning and came around to score on a Sean Houck sacrifice fly as the 'Fish extended their lead to 7-1.
Hawkins was dominant in relief on the night, as the senior went the final four innings to pick up his first save of the season. Hawkins allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning but shut the door on the Mocs as the 'Fish won by a 7-2 final.
Houck, Tufariello, Smith, and Perez all picked up two hits in the game, as Houck and Tufariello led with two RBI and Perez scored three times on the night.
The Sailfish will look to win their first three-game series against the Mocs in PBA's Division II era tomorrow as the two teams will face off in a doubleheader at Henley Field beginning at noon.
