WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball rolled to a 14-1 victory over No. 19 Wilmington on Wednesday, defeating the Wildcats at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park to snap a four-game losing streak. The Sailfish improve to 7-11 with the win while WU falls to 5-4.
Senior Heath Hawkins made his first start of the season Wednesday, and fired six shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out five batters. The Sailfish scored their first run in the bottom of the third as Brandon Seltzer singled to right-center field with two outs to plate Derek Schwimer. Seltzer knocked in the second run of the game as well as his infield single in the fifth also plated Schwimer.
A Riley Herold triple in the fifth inning broke the game open for the 'Fish, as it plated two runs and gave the 'Fish a 5-0 lead. The Wildcats scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to cut into the lead, but PBA answered with a seven-run bottom of the seventh, which was highlighted by a Seltzer grand slam to center. Connor Rowland followed with his team-leading fifth homer of the season as the 'Fish went back-to-back to take a 13-1 lead.
Schwimer doubled home Marco Meleo in the eighth inning to close out the scoring, and the combination of Justin Hernandez and Brad VanAsdlen closed out the game on the mound, as Hernandez struck out five in two scoreless innings and VanAsdlen struck out two more in the ninth.
Seltzer finished the day 3-for-4 with six RBI at the plate on the day, as Schwimer, Herold, Rowland, and Danny Tufariello added two hits as well. Schwimer came around to score four times in the game, as he also reached three times via walk.
The Sailfish will return to play on Friday, March 8 as they will open up a three-game series with Chestnut Hill College at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park at 6 p.m.
