HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis started their trip with a 7-0 victory over Erskine on Monday morning.
The Sailfish (2-3) quickly secured the doubles point as the 'Fish won at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Flying Fleet (1-6) salvaged the third doubles match. Vanessa Buchbinder and Yuliia Russu improved to 3-2 on the season with the win at No. 1, defeating Faith Wright and Katie Loudermilk 6-1. The duo of Bella Mermersky and Consuela Van Grinsven also improved to 3-2 with a 6-2 defeat of Eileen Rickert and Rachel Berkey at No. 2.
In singles action the Sailfish took all six competitions with four of them lasting just two sets. Mermersky cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Loudermilk while Russu had little resistance from Rickert at No. 4, winning 6-1, 6-4. Down at No. 5 Elvira Edstrom picked up her first victory of the season, defeating Berkey 6-3, 6-4.
Verena Weindl earned her second singles win of the year by knocking off Merghaus in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 1 and 3 positions the Sailfish needed the third set to pick up the win as Buchbinder and Van Grinsven each picked up their second victory of the season.
The Sailfish return to action in Hilton Head on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. as they take on Catawba.
