Sailfish Baseball Drops Series to Saint Leo

ST. LEO, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball dropped a doubleheader to Saint Leo on Saturday, as they drop their first Sunshine State Conference weekend series in nearly a month to fall to 16-15 overall and 6-9 in league play. Saint Leo improves to 16-14 with the wins and is now 5-7 in SSC play.

Game 1: Saint Leo 14, PBA 5

Christian Denton kept the Sailfish in the game as the junior pitched five innings in the opener and allowed three runs on eight hits.  Sean Houck came up with an RBI single in the third inning and Danny Tufariello drove in a run with a sac fly in the fourth and the 'Fish trailed 3-2 after five.

The Sailfish bullpen struggled in the game, as they allowed 11 Saint Leo runs in the seventh and eighth innings as the Lions cruised to a 14-5 win.

Saint Leo out-hit the Sailfish 18-4 in the game as Houck was the lone Sailfish player with multiple hits in the game.

Game 2: Saint Leo 8, PBA 7

Lance Fry got the ball in the series finale, and gave the Sailfish another solid outing, as he pitched into the sixth inning, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out five.

Carlos Lara singled in the third and came around to score the game's first run on a two-out double from Derek Schwimer.  The 'Fish extended their lead to 3-0 as Brandon Smith doubled to right field in the sixth inning scoring Connor Rowland and Brandon Seltzer.  Later in the inning, Lara cranked a three-run homer to left field to push the 'Fish ahead 6-0.

The Lions chased Fry from the game in the sixth with a two-run homer, but the 'Fish added a run in the seventh on a Seltzer RBI single.

The bottom of the seventh is where the game took a turn in favor of Saint Leo, as they scored three runs off two different PBA pitchers to pull within two runs.

The Lions scored three more runs in the eighth, as a couple of hits and a couple of Sailfish miscues led to the Lions taking the 8-7 lead.

Tufariello reached on a two-base throwing error to lead off the top of the ninth, and moved up to third on a wild pitch with no outs as the potential tying run for the 'Fish. Unfortunately for the Sailfish they were not able to get Tufariello across home plate and fell 8-7 in the rubber game.

Both teams collected 12 hits in the game, as Schwimer, Seltzer, and Rowland had three each for the 'Fish while Lara added two more including his first home run of the season.

PBA will return to action on Tuesday, as they will face off with Nova Southeastern at 6 p.m. in Davie, Fla.
