DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball dropped a pair of one-run games on Saturday at the UNG Classic. PBA now sits at 10-11 on the season after the two losses.
Game 1: No. 7 North Georgia 1, Palm Beach Atlantic 0
The Sailfish and Nighthawks matched up for the second consecutive week, as PBA knocked off then No. 3 UNG 6-4 last weekend. The Nighthawks had their way in this one however, as they shutout the Sailfish to win 1-0.
PBA got a great performance in the circle from sophomore Abbey Busby, who allowed just one run in a complete-game loss. She was outdueled by Kylee Smith however, as the UNG hurler shutout the 'Fish in a complete-game effort of her own.
The first hit of the game came off the bat of freshman Kaylee Winn, who doubled off the wall in left field in the second inning.
The Nighthawks broke through in the bottom of the fourth, as a double to center drove in the game's only run.
The 'Fish got a leadoff single in the sixth from Katherine Budnovich but stranded her on third. PBA went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
Game 2: Catawba 7, Palm Beach Atlantic 6
The Indians scored two runs in the top of the first, as Budnovich has some control issues and the Sailfish defense made an error. The 'Fish answered back with two in the second however, as Janie McCloskey singled and scored on an Alexis Guerra RBI groundout and Maddie Biggs came around to score on a Budnovich double.
Catawba scored two more in the top of the third, but the 'Fish had an answer once again, as Bertisch drove in West with an infield single and McCloskey drove home the tying run with an RBI single.
PBA took a lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Taylor Pennica blasted her first homer of the season to right field giving the 'Fish a 5-4 lead.
Catawba broke through offensively in the sixth, as they scored three runs on a double and a two-run homer to take a 7-5 lead.
The Sailfish got runners on second and third in the sixth but were unable to plate a run. In the seventh, Hannah Carlton led off with a single and Maddie Bertisch followed with a walk. Hayley Haas pinch-hit and laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position with one out. McCloskey grounded out to first to score one run but the 'Fish couldn't tie the game up and fell 7-6.
Bertisch finished with a two-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. McCloskey finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs on the day.
