WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis suffered a 4-3 defeat against Texas A&M – Kingsville on Saturday afternoon, snapping a nine-match winning streak in the process.
The Sailfish dropped the doubles point despite Vanessa Buchbinder and Yuliia Russu knocking off nationally ranked No. 15 Lisa Carvajal and Maya Donkor 6-4 at No. 1. The Javelinas took No. 2 and 3 doubles, 6-2 and 6-3 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Buchbinder and Russu continued their success in singles play with Buchbinder winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 over Thep Philavong. Russu defeated Valerie Ruiz 7-6 (6), 6-3 at No. 4 but TAMUK had already clinched the team match by taking No. 1, 3 and 5 singles. Elvira Edstrom also picked up a win in singles down at No. 6, taking down Stephanie Baerman 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-7.
The Sailfish are back in action on Monday as they take on Sonoma State at 4 p.m. The match has been moved up from Tuesday due to potential rain.
