ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball defeated Eckerd College on Friday evening behind a one-hitter from sophomore Abbey Busby. The Sailfish climb back to .500 in Sunshine State Conference play with the win and are now 17-14 on the year. Eckerd falls to 11-14 with the loss and are now 3-7 in league play.
Hannah Carlton led off the third inning with a single to right field, and after stealing second base, advanced to third on a sac bunt from Kaley Hinds. Magnolia West lined a single to left field with one out in the inning to plate Carlton and put the 'Fish on the board.
The Tritons tied the game up at one as catcher Skylar Redish hit a towering home run over the left-field fence to pick up the only hit of the game for Eckerd.
West lined a single to centerfield to reach base with two outs, and after stealing second base, came around to score on a throwing error after a Maddie Bertisch single to give the 'Fish a 2-1 lead.
The Sailfish added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning as Hinds and West came around to score on another Eckerd error. Busby completed the one-hitter in the bottom half as the 'Fish won their fourth game in a row.
West led the way for the 'Fish as the junior went 2-for-3 and also reached via walk. PBA stole five bases in the game and played errorless defense in the win.
The Sailfish and Tritons will be back in action tomorrow, March 16 as they will play a doubleheader beginning at noon.
