Garvin's Career Night Lifts Sailfish to Upset Win over No. 15 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball played their best game of the season on Wednesday, as they got off to a good start and held on late to knock off No. 15 Florida Southern on the road 65-64.  The Sailfish got a career night from senior Jonika Garvin, who set the PBA single-game scoring record with 38 points and added 14 rebounds in the Sailfish upset victory.

The Moccasins led 14-12 at the end of one quarter on Wednesday, as Garvin scored six in the first 10 minutes of play.  The Sailfish began the second quarter on a 6-0 run as Caroline Patrick entered the game off the bench and quickly knocked down two shots from three-point range.  From that point Garvin dominated the entire second quarter, as the Lake Worth, Fla. native scored 14 points in the quarter and led the Sailfish to a 36-26 lead at the break.

The 'Fish shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half while the Sailfish defense held the Mocs to under 30 percent.  Garvin finished the first half with 20 points.

FSC came out firing in the second half, as they opened the third quarter on an 8-1 run and cut the Sailfish lead to three.  The 'Fish weathered the Moccasin run however and ended the quarter strong to hold a six-point lead entering the final 10 minutes.

The Sailfish looked to be in control of the game with under three minutes to play, as Mina Salhia made three out of four free throws after a technical foul was called on Florida Southern and the 'Fish led 62-53.  The Mocs then found the offense they had been looking for the whole night and went on an 11-1 run in the next two minutes to take a 64-63 lead on the 'Fish.

Garvin scored her final bucket of the night with 55 seconds remaining as she made a jumper in traffic to put the 'Fish on top 65-64.  Florida Southern thought they had the game-winning basket as time expired but the shot was not taken in time and the 'Fish held on to the one-point victory.

Salhia and Patrick scored eight points each on the night for the Sailfish, and Claudia Charles gave the 'Fish a huge lift off the bench as the junior scored six points and collected 12 defensive rebounds.  Garvin added two blocks on the night to go with her 38 points and 14 boards.

The Sailfish will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 16 as they will host Eckerd College at 2 p.m. inside Rubin Arena.
