Sailfish Drop Season Opener to No. 6 Angelo State

MELBOURNE, Fla. -  Palm Beach Atlantic softball started the season on the wrong foot as they dropped the opener to No. 6 Angelo State University. The Rams (1-0) got out to an early lead and never looked back as the Sailfish (0-1) offense was able to make a dent in the lead but not overcome. The final for the first game of the Florida Tech Invitational was 10-3 in favor of Angelo State.

The Rams jumped out to an early lead in the first inning scoring one unearned run that the Sailfish were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning. That wouldn't be it for the Rams as they continued to score 9 more runs in the next three innings to put the score at 10-0 after four innings.

The 'Fish were able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as Maddie Bertisch was hit by a pitch to push Kathryn Sutton across the plate who singled earlier in the inning for her first collegiate hit. Two batters later Alexis Guerra drew a walk with bases loaded to get the second run of the inning in. Freshman Emma Gipson then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score PBA's third and final run of the game.

The top of the order led the way for the Sailfish as Magnolia West saw the ball well tonight starting the game off with a single before following that up with a double in the third inning. She went on to finish the night 2-3 with a walk. Bertisch finished the game 1-2 with a single, a walk, a hit by pitch, and one RBI.

The Sailfish will finish up at the Florida Tech Invitational Saturday Feb. 3 as they take on Barry at 3 pm and Florida Tech at 5 pm.
