Men's Basketball Ends 2019 with Win Against Washburn

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team played its last game of 2019 on Thursday night at the Cruzin Classic against Washburn.

It was the hot hand of Darhius Nunn that helped lead the Sailfish over the Ichabods. Nunn led the Sailfish with a season-high 24 points, including shooting 8-for-10 from beyond the 3-point line. PBA (8-3, 1-2 Sunshine State Conference) outshot Washburn (6-5, 1-1 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association) 55 percent to 47 percent in the game on its way to an 82-66 win over WU.

Four Sailfish reached double-digit scoring in the game. Nunn added four rebounds, three steals and three assists to his 24 points. Jules Jasmin and Aleksa Rakic added 13 points each. Justin Nichelson followed with 11 points of his own. De'Ondre Jackson nearly finished with a double-double, tallying eight points and seven rebounds.

The game was a back-and-forth contest until the nine-minute mark when PBA began to build its lead. With Washburn leading 19-18, The Sailfish went on an 11-0 run including one triple from Nunn and six points from Jackson which gave PBA a 29-19 lead.

PBA continued to build its lead throughout the rest of the first half. With four minutes remaining in the half, the Sailfish added another 5-0 run to create more breathing room. PBA went into the half leading the Ichabods 46-32.

The Sailfish kept the momentum rolling in the second half. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, a 9-0 run from PBA gave the 'Fish their largest lead of the game and essentially put it out of reach. A made jumper and a layup by Malek Barber gave the 'Fish a 65-39 lead with nine minutes left. Washburn continued to show fight, with an 19-9 run, but it was too little too late for the Ichabods. The Sailfish cruised to an 82-66 win to end 2019.

PBA had its way down low with the 'Fish scoring 32 points in the paint compared to just 17 for WU. The Sailfish also won the turnover battle 20-14 which led to 27 points off turnovers for PBA.

The Sailfish will take a break for the holidays before resuming their season in 2020 on Jan. 2 against Tampa. The game at Rubin Arena takes place at
