DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball dropped a Sunshine State Conference game at Embry-Riddle tonight. The Sailfish fall to 1-8 following the 73-37 defeat and 0-3 in conference play. The Eagles move to 5-3 and 3-1 in the SSC after the victory.
The Sailfish scored their season-low in points, 37, against the Eagles, with their previous low of 44 coming against a ranked Benedict squad. The 'Fish trailed 25-10 after the first quarter where the Eagles were hot from the field shooting over 70 percent from the floor. PBA struggled early to create quality scoring chances against an Eagles press that forced six early turnovers.
Avree Carpenter was the focal point of the Sailfish offense scoring six in the first quarter where the Sailfish shot 4-of-12 from the field.
The second quarter was more of the same as Embry-Riddle outscored the 'Fish 22-11 in the second quarter. The Eagles were led by Sarah Jones who scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Embry-Riddle was able to connect on 7-of-14 threes while the Sailfish were 0-of-8 from behind the arc in the first half. The two teams went into the locker room with the Sailfish trailing 47-21.
The Sailfish continued to struggle shooting in the second half and finished the game 14-of-53, 26 percent and 2-of-18 from three while the Eagles finished at 47 percent, 27-of-57 from the floor. PBA struggled with turnovers finishing with 23, creating extra scoring opportunities for the hot-shooting Eagles. Carpenter was the lone Sailfish player to finish in double-figures with 10 points on 5-of-16 shooting. The Eagles had four players score in double figures paced by Jones' 18 and Nikki Tucker's 14.
The Sailfish will look to bounce back on Monday, Dec. 16 when they host a Johnson team still looking for its first win of the season at 5:30 p.m. at Rubin Arena.
