CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team needed overtime to pick up its first win of the 2019-20 season Saturday night against West Georgia at the GSC/SSC Classic.
With the Sailfish leading by three with just over a minute remaining in regulation, it seemed as if PBA (1-1) would cruise to victory. West Georgia (0-2) had other plans as the Wolves sunk a 3-pointer which tied the game at 74. Both teams got two looks at the basket in the final minute, but neither team was able to score, sending the game to overtime.
PBA struck first in overtime as
Alexander Gorton made three free throws to give his team an early three-point lead. West Georgia answered with a four-point play after a made 3-pointer with a foul that gave the Wolves a one-point advantage. Each team traded buckets, tying the game at 81. A layup from Gorton and two free throws from Largey gave PBA an 85-81 advantage with 13 seconds left. West Georgia scored a quick bucket to make it a one possession game with three seconds left, but
Darhius Nunn iced the game at the free throw line to make it 87-83. The Wolves made a last second three, but ran out of time.
The difference in the game came down to PBA's 29-19 advantage in points off turnovers and a 10-point difference in points in the paint.
Dan Largey led the Sailfish in scoring for the second straight night as his 22 points and nine rebounds lifted PBA over West Georgia, 87-86
Gorton totaled 15 points, including going 5-for-8 from the charity stripe. Nunn added 12 points with six assists.
De'Ondre Jackson finished with 10 points and four rebounds. The Sailfish got 22 points off the bench, including nine points and two 3-pointers from
Justin Nichelson.
PBA will look to build a winning streak with its next match coming at Clark Atlanta on Monday. The game in Atlanta, Ga. is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
