LAKELAND, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team concluded its road trip on Friday afternoon at Florida Southern.
PBA (13-9, 5-6 Sunshine State Conference) bounced back from last night's lost against Eckerd with a 3-1 victory over the Mocs. The Sailfish outhit FSC (5-16, 1-10 SSC) .217-.175 in the match as the outside hitting duo of
Sam Wolf and
Caroline Swan led PBA passed the Mocs.
The Sailfish started strong against the Mocs by picking up a win in the first set. The set was tightly contested as each team battled back and forth until the very end. The Sailfish were finally able to pull away at the end of the set. With the Mocs leading 21-19, PBA went on a 7-1 run which included three kills from
Jazz Schmidt and two service aces from
Ally Smith to win the set 25-18.
PBA was able to earn a victory in the second set due to two key runs. Midway through the set, a 7-0 run that included kills from Wolf,
Amber Rowoldt and
Jordan Rush gave the Sailfish a 14-9 lead. They followed that up with a 7-1 run which made the score 21-14. Two kills from Wolf put the exclamation point on a 25-21 set win for PBA.
The third set was another back and forth affair where neither team could pull away. FSC led 24-23 down the stretch as PBA faced set point. The Sailfish fought back to take a 25-24 lead as it looked as if PBA may steal the set. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the Mocs scored four of the last five points in the set to win 28-26.
Both teams traded long runs in the fourth set. FSC built an early lead off a 5-0 run, but PBA answered with a 9-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. The Mocs followed with a 7-0 run of their own to regain the lead. A 7-2 run by the Sailfish put PBA ahead, and it stayed ahead, winning the set 25-21 to clinch the match.
Wolf led PBA with 18 kills while hitting .325. Swan followed with 15 kills of her own. Schmidt ended with her second straight triple-double consisting of 12 kills, 24 assists and 14 digs.
Lilly Turner led PBA with 19 digs, while
Emma Pieper added 25 assists to the cause.
The Sailfish return home on Tuesday to face Nova Southeastern. The match at Rubin Arena takes place at 7 p.m.
