ST. LEO, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic's men's basketball team fell Saturday night against Saint Leo in a game that required overtime to determine a winner. The Sailfish (8-11) and the Lions (9-10) were evenly matched all night but a few crucial mistakes gave Saint Leo the advantage and eventually the win by a score of 71-68.
The Sailfish controlled the first half with strong shooting. PBA shot 50 percent and had eight players scoring points in the first 20 minutes. The 'Fish put together a 12-to-2 run in the final three minutes of the half to garner a six-point lead at halftime.
The hot shooting hands of the Sailfish cooled in the second half which was a back-and-forth battle that included six lead changes. De'Ondre Jackson was the top performer in the half for the Sailfish where he scored 7 of his 14 total points of the game. With the game tied, PBA had the ball for the last possession regulation but was unable to get a shot off and the game went to overtime.
Overtime was all Lions as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The 'Fish were able to keep it close and even tie the game but could not muster up a lead. After pulling within three down the stretch, the Sailfish had an opportunity to tie the game but again were unable to get an attempt off in the final seconds giving the Lions a 71-68 win.
Palm Beach Atlantic ended the game shooting 44 percent from the field. The Sailfish were taking high percentage shots, outscoring the Lions 48-24 in the paint. Jules Jasmin and Jackson were the leading scorers for the Sailfish as they both finished with 14 points. Malek Barber continued playing well as he attributed 11 points while Bakari Warthen added 10 of his own. Barber was also responsible for seven rebounds.
The Sailfish will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 as they host county rival Lynn University at Rubin Arena. Tip-off against the Fighting Knights is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
