WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer had a strong defensive outing but couldn't convert in the final third on Saturday night, drawing Tampa, 0-0. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Madison Chiola was lights out in goal, tallying eight saves in the shutout.
Freshman Thorkatla Halldorsdottir came to PBA's rescue in the 35th and 37th minutes, making two saves off of the line on Tampa's Nastasia Asgedom. Her first in the 35th minute came from point blank range, redirecting the ball with her left foot. Her second two minutes later blocked the shot from entering the right corner of the goal frame.
Eighteen fouls were recorded in the first half between both teams, and Tampa recorded six shots while limiting PBA to two shots.
The 'Fish kicked off the second half with intense pressure on the ball, chasing down Tampa attackers and crossing numerous balls into the box. The Sailfish's lone shot on goal came in the 74th minute when Lindsey Pinder directed a shot to the goal frame that was blocked by Megan Bromwell and numerous Spartan defenders.
Syd Griner had an opportunity with 28 seconds remaining in regulation to net a winner for Tampa, but her left-corner header was saved calmly by Chiola. The teams entered overtime tied, 0-0.
The first overtime period saw a fantastic save from Chiola on a driven shot by Asgedom from 20 yards out into the left corner. No other shots on goal were recorded by either team in the first overtime period.
Kylee Rullo had a one-on-one opportunity with two minutes remaining in overtime to win the game for the Sailfish, but pushed her shot just right of the post.
In total Tampa tallied 20 shots to PBA's five while Chiola recorded eight saves on the night for the 'Fish. The Spartans and Sailfish combined for 31 fouls.
The Sailfish will next host Barry at the Rinker Athletic Campus this Wednesday at 6 p.m.Â
