MELBOURNE, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball remained unbeaten on Saturday, as the No. 4 ranked Sailfish swept Florida Tech in a road match to improve to 12-0 on the season and 4-0 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Sailfish dominated the match offensively, hitting .350 for the match while limiting Florida Tech to a .162 hitting percentage.
The Sailfish pulled away late to win the first set 25-21 on Saturday, and got a solid first set from senior Raegan Grooms, who had five kills on just eight swings in the opening frame. Libero Lilly Turner had three service aces in the first set and added five digs.
The second set was all Sailfish, as the 'Fish hit .343 and cruised to a 25-17 victory. The Sailfish were up 19-15 before winning six out of the final eight points in the set. PBA was up 20-12 in the final set and looked like they would cruise to the sweep, but FIT mounted a comeback, cutting the lead to 21-18. The teams were tied at 26 before a Sophie Hoekstra kill gave the 'Fish a lead and a bad set gave the Sailfish the victory in straight sets.
The 'Fish received a great match from Turner on Saturday, as the sophomore tallied 16 digs, six assists, and four service aces. Molly Burkhardt was solid again for PBA, as she had four kills, seven digs, and 33 assists in the win.
Grooms led the 'Fish with 13 kills on the day and had just two errors while hitting .407. Amber Rowoldt continued her stellar freshman campaign with 10 kills and eight assists. Maddie Span was unstoppable at the net on Saturday, as the senior had nine kills in just 13 attacks and added eight total blocks including three solo blocks.
PBA will now prepare for a busy week of play, as the 'Fish will host Barry on Tuesday, Tampa on Friday, and Rollins on Saturday inside Rubin Arena. The Sailfish and Buccaneers will face off in a battle of unbeaten teams on Tuesday, as Barry swept Florida Southern Saturday to improve to 4-0 in SSC play and 12-0 overall.
