WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball has advanced to the NCAA South Region 1 Championship Game, as they defeated Valdosta State 1-0 on Friday night in an elimination game in front of a rowdy crowd at Simpson Field. The Sailfish lost to Alabama-Huntsville earlier on Friday 5-3, forcing the Sailfish into the loser's bracket.
In the first game of the day, PBA fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but came back to tie the game in the third inning as the Sailfish scored two runs on an UAH error. Alabama-Huntsville broke the game open in the fourth inning, as they scored three runs to take a commanding lead.
The Sailfish scored a run in the seventh inning on a Taylor Pennica single but were unable to complete the comeback and fell by the 5-3 final score.
After Valdosta State defeated Albany State in the second game of the day, the Sailfish and Blazers met up with a chance to go to the South Region 1 Championship.
Ashton Adkins got the start in the circle for the 'Fish, and had a 1-2-3 first inning to open up the game.
Magnolia West lined a single to left field to lead off the bottom half, and Maddie Bertisch walked and Hannah Carlton was hit by pitch to load the bases with one out. Edmilly Molina, playing her first games in several weeks after a mid-season injury, drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Sailfish ahead 1-0.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the 'Fish for several innings, and Loren Kilgore entered the game on defense in the fourth inning, and was immediately tested, as Heather Robinson hit a ball to deep left field. Kilgore caught the ball up against the wall, keeping the Blazers off the scoreboard.
Adkins exited the game in the sixth inning, as the senior kept the Blazers off the scoreboard through 5.1 innings, and gave way to freshman Abbey Busby. Busby completed the shutout for the Sailfish and picked up her second save of the season.
The Sailfish will now play Alabama-Huntsville tomorrow, May 12 at 1 p.m. The Sailfish will need to beat the Chargers twice tomorrow to win the South Region 1 Championship and advance to super-regional play.
