WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball forced the "if necessary" game of the NCAA South Region 1 Regional on Saturday, defeating the UAH Chargers 3-0. The Chargers bounced back however to win the final game of the tournament 5-1, booking their ticket to the NCAA South Super-Regional.
The Sailfish finish their season with a 36-8 record, and won their first Sunshine State Conference Championship and were named hosts of the Regional Tournament for the first time in program history.
The Sailfish and Chargers were locked in a scoreless game through five innings, as Ashton Adkins and Kiara Akles were matching each other pitch-for-pitch. The Sailfish finally broke through in the sixth inning, as Hannah Carlton led off with a triple, and came around to score on a RBI groundout from Edmilly Molina. The Fish added runs on an Alexis Guerra groundout and a Claudia Pizzarelli single to open up a 3-0 lead.
After Abbey Busby picked up five outs in relief of Adkins, Adkins returned to the circle in the fifth inning, and picked up the final seven outs of the game to seal the win for the 'Fish.
The Sailfish scored a run in the first inning of the Championship game, as Edmilly Molina singled to center, driving home Maddie Bertisch.
The Sailfish held their lead until the fourth inning, where UAH scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. The Chargers added one in the fifth and two in the seventh to win by the 5-1 final.
Bertisch picked up two hits in each game on Saturday, as she led the way for the 'Fish offensively. Adkins was the workhorse foe the Sailfish in the circle in the postseason, as she threw over 20 innings this weekend before allowing her first run, which came in the fourth inning of the season finale.
