ST. LEO, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis fell short in their first NCAA Tournament match since 2008, losing to No. 2 seed and No. 2 ranked Saint Leo 5-0 on Monday morning.
The Sailfish (15-10) kept things close in the top two doubles matches. The 'Fish nearly pulled off the win at No. 2 as Philipp Hoffmann and Bernardo Ferreira were pushed to a tiebreaker with Francisco Aparicio and Aurel Ciocanu picking up the win 9-8 (9-7). At No. 1 doubles No. 19 ranked Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva were overcome by a late run from No. 2 ranked Thomas Grinberg and Vincent Suillerot as the Lions won 8-4.
In singles play Grinberg – ranked No. 1 in Division II – was the first off the court as he defeated No. 33 Zarazua 6-1, 6-2. Down at No. 5 Thomas Salmon fell to Aparicio 6-3, 6-2 as the Lions moved to the final match on Tuesday.
Carlos Niemeyer was the lone Sailfish to win the first set as he defeated Aurel Ciocanu 6-3. Ciocanu was up 3-1 in the second before the team outcome was determined.
