WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis picked up an impressive 7-2 victory over Embry-Riddle to close out the regular season on Sunday. The Sailfish will head into the Sunshine State Conference Tournament later this week.
PBA started off well in doubles, picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The duo of Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva – ranked No. 28 nationally – were able to take down No. 9 Andres Donayre and Rodolfo Arreygue, 8-6. Philipp Hoffmann and Bernardo Ferreira were impressive at No. 2 as they beat Juan Ortiz Couder and Lucas Bos 8-4. The Eagles picked up their lone doubles point at No. 3 as Deepak Vishavkarma and Mickael Faucher defeated Rodolfo Hasegawa and Thomas Salmon 8-6.
The top of the Sailfish lineup performed exceptionally well in singles as both Zarazua and Hoffmann earned wins over nationally ranked opponents. Zarazua – ranked No. 38 – defeated No. 30 Ortiz Couder 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 with Hoffmann winning after leading No. 31 Donayre 6-1, 2-1 when Donayre retired.
Pietro de Silva also won at No. 3 as he defeated Vishavkarma 6-4, 6-4 with Carlos Niemeyer defeating Bos 6-2, 7-6 (5). Ferreira had the easiest win of the day, defeating Faucher 6-2, 6-4 to give the 'Fish the team victory.
The Sailfish will get a rematch with the Eagles as the teams will take the court at IMG Academy in Bradenton on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the SSC Tournament. PBA will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed with a 5-3 league record with ERAU the No. 5 seed after finishing conference play at 4-4. The Sailfish end the regular season at 15-8.
The winner advances to the semifinals on Friday against the winner of No.1 Saint Leo and No. 8 Florida Tech.
