WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball swept a doubleheader against Eckerd College on Saturday afternoon, as they won both games by 3-0 final scores. The 'Fish received outstanding pitching performances from Ashton Adkins and Abbey Busby on the day, as both threw complete game shutouts as the 'Fish have now won 12 games in a row and are 8-0 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Game 1: PBA 3, Eckerd 0
The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel, as both starting pitchers dominated through four scoreless innings. The Sailfish broke through in the fifth inning, as Taylor Pennica pinch hit, and singled up the middle, scoring Maddie Bertisch. Alexis Guerra ran for Pennica, and came around to score later in the inning on an Eckerd error.
The Sailfish added a run in the sixth inning as Bertisch singled to center field, scoring Edmilly Molina.
Adkins was brilliant in the circle for the 'Fish, as the senior completed a two-hit shutout, while striking out seven batters. Adkins faced just three batters over the minimum in the Sailfish victory.
Bertisch was the only Sailfish batter to record multiple hits in the game, as she finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2: PBA 3, Eckerd 0
The second game of the three-game series was much like the first, as both starting pitchers were strong early on. A rain delay in the second inning forced a short stoppage, but the weather subsided, allowing the teams to continue after about a 30 minute break.
The Sailfish scored their first run in the third inning, as Bertisch was at it again, singling to left field and scoring Loren Kilgore to give the 'Fish a lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning, when Michaela Hynes got hold of an inside pitch, sending it over the left-field fence for a two-run homer.
Busby completed her shutout on the day to improve to 6-0 on the season in the circle. The freshman allowed six hits, but walked nobody in the game while punching out seven Triton hitters.
The Sailfish stole five bases in the game, and were led offensively by Magnolia West and Bertisch, who collected two hits each.
The Sailfish will return to Simpson Field tomorrow, March 11 for an early 11 am start in the final game of the series against Eckerd.
