WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball finished off the three-game weekend sweep of Adelphi on Saturday, winning 8-0 and 8-2 to improve to 10-2 on the season.
The Sailfish have won seven straight and entered the week ranked No. 18 by the NFCA. The Sailfish had 23 hits and scored 16 runs on the day and registered 34 hits and 27 runs in the three-game series with the Panthers.
The 'Fish are back in action next weekend with a conference series with Rollins beginning on Friday, March 2.
Game One
The Sailfish scored in five of the six innings as the team was able to run-rule the Panthers in the opening game of the day, 8-0. Michaela Hynes collected three hits in the game including driving in the first run with a single in the first. She also scored twice, first in the third on a sacrifice bunt from Hannah Carlton and later in the fifth on a Loren Kilgore single.
The 'Fish collected 12 hits in the game with three players each recording two. Magnolia West, Maddie Bertisch and Carlton each had a multi-hit game in addition to Hynes. Bertisch scored a run in the fourth on a double steal as she took home and Alexis Guerra took second. Bertisch later ended the game, drawing a bases loaded walk to give the Sailfish the final margin of 8-0.
Maddie Biggs double in a run in the sixth to bring it to 7-0 but it was the fifth where PBA did their most damage. In addition to Kilgore's RBI single, the Sailfish scored twice on a fielder's choice in the inning. Claudia Pizzarelli scored on the play with Carlton coming around later on a throwing error.
Abbey Busby dominated in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out six to improve to 4-0 on the season. She didn't walk a batter in the game as she earned her second complete game and first shutout of the season.
Game Two
The Sailfish fell behind 2-0 after the Panthers scored twice in the opening frame but from there the 'Fish kept Adelphi off the board. Michaela Hynes continued her impressive day at the plate for PBA as she collected three more hits including a two-run homer to left in the third. That capped the scoring for PBA in that frame as they put up four runs to take a 4-2 lead.
Claudia Pizzarelli had the big blow in the fifth for the 'Fish as she cleared the bases with a three-run triple to left center. That pushed the 'Fish lead to 8-2 where it stayed.
Magnolia West picked up three more hits in the game to push her season average to .488. Hannah Carlton also had a hit and an RBI as she singled in Maddie Bertsich in the third.
Jana Wagner improved to 4-0 on the year after tossing five innings and allowing two runs. She walked one and struck out three.
