WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball earned their first Sunshine State Conference victory in program history on Friday night, as the Sailfish overcame a sloppy start to defeat Barry by a 6-5 final score in a come from behind victory. The Sailfish improve to 5-2 on the season and are now 1-0 in SSC play. Barry droops to 3-8 on the young season.
Barry scored two runs in the top of the first inning, as Kristina Osorio tripled home a run and scored herself on an error. The Sailfish got one run back in the second as Maddie Bertisch drove in a run with an RBI groundout.
After Barry scored a third run in the top of the third, Maddie Biggs came up with a big hit, as she doubled in two runs to deep left field, and tied the game at three.
The Sailfish took a lead in the fifth inning as Edmilly Molina laced a single to right-center field to put the 'Fish up 4-3. More sloppy play however led to Barry getting two runs in the top of the sixth inning and taking a lead into the bottom of the sixth.
Taylor Pennica pinch hit for the 'Fish in the sixth and drew a one-out walk. After Bertisch and Magnolia West reached on singles, Claudia Pizzarelli reached on an error by the pitcher, which sent Kaley Hinds home to tie the game. The next batter, Michaela Hynes, hit a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in the go-ahead run for the 'Fish.
Jana Wagner threw a scoreless seventh inning as the senior picked up her second win of the season, throwing two innings in relief of Ashton Adkins. Adkins finished with five innings pitched and struck out five batters, allowing four runs (two earned) and getting a no decision.
West, Molina, Brianna Rano, and Biggs all picked up multi-hit games for the 'Fish on Friday night.
The Sailfish will finish their weekend series with Barry tomorrow, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Simpson Field.
