BOCA RATON, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball made the short trip down to FAU to take on the Owls in an exhibition game for the Sailfish. PBA was able to hang tough with the Owls for most of the game before FAU pulled away at the end giving them the 73-62 victory.
The game started off competitive with both teams making baskets. The Sailfish offense got an early boost from a big three from Bakari Warthen to put the Sailfish up 8-5. Jules Jasmin would follow that up with a high flying alley-oop on a great pass from Matthew Johnson. PBA would then go one for nine on the field to make it 13-13 at the second media timeout with 9:46 left to play. Both teams were having trouble finding the bottom of the net thanks to strong defense on both sides with FAU shooting 7-25 from the field and PBA going 7-21 at the 6:57 remaining mark. The Owls snagged a five point lead on a deep shot from Xavian Stapleton putting the score at 26-21. With just 1:41 left in the half, Caleb Edwards drained a three from the corner to put the Sailfish on a 6-0 run and up 29-28.
The second half was more of the same as scoring was held to a minimum in the first four minutes. PBA was able to recapture the lead on layup by Jasmin capping a 6-0 run and putting the Sailfish up 36-35. The Owls turned it around, hitting a few shots in a row including two from beyond the arch by Jailyn Ingram and Richardson Maitre which extended their lead to eight. The Owls would eventually stretch the lead to 15 with 11:26 remaining in the second half. The 'Fish were able to cut the lead to single digits thanks to treys from Johnson and Paxton Wilson, making the score 58-49 with 8:45 left on the clock. It was all Owls' in the final five minutes as their offense was able to soar over the Sailfish and secure the win for FAU.
The Sailfish were plagued with turnovers giving away the ball 21 times tonight but luckily they were able to force 21 turnovers as well. PBA shot 35% from the field including a very strong 7-13 from behind the arch. Wilson was tonight's Sailfish points leader with 16 points coming from a 5-9 shooting clip from three point range. Jasmin finished the night with 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds which was the most by any 'Fish tonight. Johnson was able to dish out four assists while adding seven points of his own.
The Sailfish take a short break for the holiday and return to action on Wednesday Nov. 28 to take on Lynn in Boca Raton.
