WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball started Monday night strong with a 50-point first half but were unable to contain a late Young Harris surge, falling 87-82.
The 'Fish got off to a hot start, taking advantage of four turnovers from the Mountain Lions to score 12 fast break points in a 14-0 run. Redshirt junior guard De'Ondre Jackson led the 'Fish in the first four minutes with 10 points on a three-pointer, layup, jumper, free throw and dunk.
Young Harris recovered in the next six minutes to pull within three at the midway point of the first half. Redshirt junior center Andrew Moemeka laid down a dunk with 9:44 left to end a 16-5 Mountain Lion run.
Palm Beach Atlantic's lead hovered at six for the next five minutes as both teams exchanged quick points. Both the 'Fish and the Mountain Lions recorded six free throws as PBA led 33-27 with 4:57 left.
A three from sophomore guard Paxton Wilson and a pair from redshirt junior guard Casey Carpinello had the 'Fish up by eight, but two free throws from the Mountain Lions made the scoreline 50-44 in favor of the 'Fish at the half. Palm Beach Atlantic shot 52 percent from the field and both teams combined for 29 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Sailfish started the second half with a statement as Jackson saved a loose ball and queued up an alley-oop for Moemeka. Young Harris answered back with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 52 and forced a timeout from PBA head coach David Balza.
Chaos on the court ensued over the next two minutes as Young Harris turned the ball over six times and PBA went on a 7-0 run to lead 59-52 with 15:31 left in the game. Both offenses fell quiet over the next three minutes as Young Harris and PBA only scored from the charity stripe, two points and one point, respectively.Â
The Mountain Lions went ahead 73-72 with 6:10 left on a string of layups and free throws. Young Harris held on to the one-point margin over the next two minutes before a triple gave them a 78-74 lead. The 'Fish strung together three quick possessions that tied the game at 80 with 1:14 left.
Young Harris used free throws from Seth McCoy and Justin Jones to go up by three with 14 seconds left and held on to win the game, 87-82.
The Sailfish have a quick turnaround as they face Bemidji State on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Rubin Arena.
