WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic's men's soccer team was held in check by Nova Southeastern most of the match on Thursday night, but two PBA defenders scored late as the 'Fish advanced to the SSC Tournament Championship match of the first time.
PBA (18-1) and Nova Southeastern played an even first half with both teams making runs at the goal. The 'Fish doubled up the Sharks in shots in the opening 45 minutes, 6-3 with NSU's Tito Le Roux coming up with the lone save.
The Sharks found the net in the 73rd minute as Curtis Thorn netted the opening goal off a corner kick from Jan Luca Ahillen. The Sailfish began to press forward in earnest but it took 13 minutes to find the equalizer.
A foul just outside the box set up Juan Sanchez for his first goal of the season. Sanchez delivered a beautiful free kick that rose above the wall and dipped into the upper 90 in the 86th minute.
That was just the beginning of the interesting moments as the 'Fish were awarded an indirect free kick at the 6-yard box after NSU's keeper handled the ball after a pass back from his teammate. The initial attempt was blocked and the rebound saved by Le Roux but the ball bounced out to Callum Chapman-Page on the far post and he put it in with 46 seconds left to give the 'Fish their first SSC Tournament victory.
PBA will advance in the tournament to host Barry on Sunday after the Buccaneers defeated Lynn 2-0 earlier on Thursday. The finals will be a matchup of the top two seeds in the tournament. The Sailfish defeated Barry 3-2 in overtime in Miami Shores earlier this season.
Kickoff on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
