Opportunistic ‘Fish Earn the Win at Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer used a strong second half on Wednesday night to defeat Lynn 3-1, recording their first conference win of 2018. The 'Fish pounced on attacking opportunities while goalkeeper Madison Chiola kept the Fighting Knights' offense in check.

The first five minutes saw a flurry of action as Chiola made an early save on Monica Rojas in the second minute, while Kylee Rullo had her inside post shot saved at the last second by Gabriella Lopez in the third minute.

Kylie Meola struck first for the Sailfish in the ninth minute, taking a cross from Shannon Berg at the top of the box and finishing into the top right corner of the goal. Meola's third goal of the year put the 'Fish up 1-0.

Lynn nearly tied the game one minute later when Rojas' shot deflected off the top crossbar. Chiola came up big in the 28th minute when she saved a close-range blast from Morgan Meltzer inside the box, keeping the scoreline 1-0.

Cajsa Lundstrom had two opportunities in the closing minutes of the first half to put the 'Fish up 2-0. Lopez made a magnificent clearance in the 42nd minute and Lundstrom's shot in the 43rd minute drifted just wide.

Lynn opened the second half with a goal, scoring in the 49th minute after Felicia Silveira finished on a deflected save from Chiola.

The 'Fish keeper made two great saves in 53rd and 54th minutes on outside the box shots to keep the game tied at one.

Rullo's attempt to chip the keeper in the 68th minute just missed the mark, falling short of the top left corner of the goal.

PBA went ahead 2-1 in the 70th minute after Sophia Boris' shot deflected off the crossbar, falling to the feet of Rullo who put the ball away.

The Sailfish needed help from Chiola in the closing minutes of regulation to fend off a vengeful Fighting Knights attack. The freshman goalkeeper finished the game with 14 saves, the most from a 'Fish keeper since 2015 and overall tied second in the Division II-era.

Karina Williams added the safety net goal in the 88th minute on a breakaway counterattack. Meola slotted a through ball to the top of the box that Williams placed into the left corner. The Sailfish held off the Fighting Knights for the rest of regulation to win 3-1.

Palm Beach Atlantic will travel to Winter Park on Saturday as they take on Rollins. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
