LAKELAND, Fla. - Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer fell behind 1-0 just five minutes into the contest but battled back on Saturday night to defeat Florida Southern 3-2 in overtime. Although the 'Fish won in Lakeland they are eliminated from SSC postseason contention as Florida Tech defeated Tampa, 2-1.
Caitlin Quaempts kicked things off for the Moccasins in the fifth minute, taking an Anna Griessler pass and shooting from outside the box into the right corner of the goal. Quaempts' goal put Florida Southern (5-9-1, 3-6 SSC) up, 1-0.
Palm Beach Atlantic (7-7-2, 3-5-1 SSC) didn't lose focus, leveling the match in the 23rd minute. Shannon Berg cut back from the left side of the goal and served a pass to the corner for Kylee Rullo. Rullo chipped the ball to the right side of the goal to even the score at one.
The Sailfish went ahead in the 38th minute after Maddie McCarty lofted a free kick from just past midfield. Freshman Sophia Boris headed the ball over the reach of Tori Routt and gave the 'Fish the 2-1 lead at the end of the first half.
Florida Southern tied the game at two in the 63rd minute when Caitlin Quaempts scored her second goal of the night. Quaempts beat her defender from 12 yards out and slotted a shot into the back of the net.
Palm Beach Atlantic nearly scored the go-ahead goal with three minutes remaining in regulation after the Moccasins fouled a 'Fish attacker at the edge of the box. Kylie Meola blasted the set-piece service over the bar, keeping the game tied.
Only five minutes passed in the first overtime period before the 'Fish scored the game-winner. Karina Williams crossed a ball into the box that fell to the feet of Shannon Berg. Berg directed the ball into the net and the 'Fish won 3-2 in the overtime thriller.
Palm Beach Atlantic will conclude the regular season on Tuesday night at home against Embry-Riddle. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
