Sailfish Rise To The Top With Win Over Mocs

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic won for the fourth time this season by a score of 1-0, defeating Florida Southern on Senior Night at the Rinker Athletic Campus.

The No. 3 ranked Sailfish (15-1, 8-1 SSC) were held to five shots in the opening 45 minutes but it was a free kick in the 58th minute that proved to be the difference. Blake Barribeau served the ball from the right side into the box and Mocs keeper Benny Yusufoglu rose up to grab it but it slipped through his hands. Thomas Spear was sitting on the back post and headed the ball into the net to give PBA the lead. The goal is the first for Spear as a Sailfish.

The Sailfish ended up creating the better chances after the goal as Yusufoglu was forced to make five saves down the stretch to keep the deficit at 1-0. He was credited with six saves on the night. Elliott Barker made five saves in total on the night for PBA with three coming in the second half. He was able to keep his area free of dangerous chances all night, doing well on set pieces into the box.

The Mocs were forced to play down a man in the final 5:02 after two players were served a red card. Alberto Diaz was shown a red after an incident near midfield that resulted in a total of two yellow cards and two red cards. Foster Appiah was also shown a red after entering the field from the bench area during the incident.

PBA leads the SSC with 24 points with one match remaining in league play. Lynn and Nova Southeastern sit in a tie for second at 21 points and will play each other on Tuesday. Barry, Florida Southern and Florida Tech have all secured spots in the SSC Tournament as well as the top six will advance.

The Sailfish are set to host Florida Memorial on Monday at 7 p.m. in a nonconference match before closing out the regular season at Embry-Riddle on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Sailfish need a tie or win to secure their second straight SSC Regular Season Championship.
