TAMPA, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball fell short on Saturday against the University of Tampa, as they mounted a large fourth quarter comeback, cutting what was a 13-point deficit to just one before falling by a 70-63 final score. The Sailfish fall to 2-12 overall with the loss and drop to 1-7 in Sunshine State Conference play. Tampa improves to 12-2 and 5-2 in league play.
Tampa jumped out to a 7-0 lead just minutes into Saturday's contest, and outscored the Sailfish in the first quarter by a 20-12 total. The Fish struggled from the floor in the quarter, making just 6-of-16 field goals.
The Sailfish outscored Tampa 13-12 in the second quarter, but entered halftime trailing 32-25. Senior Hannah Grim was right on her season average as she scored 11 in the first half. Faith Sanders led the Spartans with nine first half points.
Grim and the entire Sailfish offense had a tough third quarter, as Tampa outscored PBA 16-10 and only allowed the 'Fish to go 4-of-11 from the field.
The 'Fish trailed 48-35 entering the fourth quarter, but they mounted a furious comeback, needing just five minutes to go on a 14-2 run and cutting the Spartan lead to just one point. The Sailfish were never able to tie or gain the lead however, as Tampa was efficient in the fourth quarter, making seven of their nine field goal attempts and all six of their attempts from the charity stripe.
Grim had a monster quarter, scoring 20 points in the fourth and finishing with a career high 33. Grim breaks her previous high of 31, set earlier this week against Rollins College. The 33 points puts the Apple Valley, Minn. native over 1000 for her career with Palm Beach Atlantic.
Nkiru Anyagaligbo scored nine points and added six rebounds for the 'Fish, while Darsan DeShazier scored seven points off the bench for the Sailfish on the day. Rachel Warden led the way for the Spartans, as she scored a career high 26 points on 7-of-11 shooting and played all 40 minutes.
The Sailfish will now have a break before returning to action on Jan. 13 against Lynn at 2 p.m. inside Rubin Arena.
