INDIANA, Pa. – No. 6 Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball flexed their muscle in their first game of the season, defeating Clarion University 25-18, 25-14, 25-21 at the Crimson Hawk Invitational hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The Sailfish (1-0) hit a solid .254 for the match with newcomer
Raegan Grooms leading the team with 13 kills. The junior-transfer from Armstrong State hit .333 for the match on a team high 30 attempts. Senior
Sarah Kimmey picked up where she left off last season 10 kills on 17 swings, a .529 attack for the all-American.
After a slow offensive start, hitting just .152 in the first set, the Sailfish came alive in the second and third sets. The 'Fish hit .308 and .283 in the final two sets to secure their 33rd win in their last 34 matches.
PBA collected nine team blocks with junior
Maddie Span leading the team with six. Freshman
Jazz Schmidt added four including the team's lone solo block on the night. Schmidt added eight digs, five kills, four assists and three aces on the night.
A 9-0 run with Schmidt at the service line in the second opened up a one-point match, giving the 'Fish an 18-8 lead. The Sailfish had to fend off the Golden Eagles in the third from forcing another set. Clarion tied the set at 20-20 before the 'Fish took fourth straight to pull away. Kills by Grooms and Rohn gave the Sailfish a cushion before a block from Span and Schmidt really put it out of reach.
Ally Rohn posted a double-double on the night with a team-high 21 assists and 12 digs. She was one kill shy of a triple-double with nine. The junior added two blocks.
Molly Burkhardt also notched a double-double with 16 assists and 14 digs.
Susie Forbes led the team with 16 digs.
