LAKELAND, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball came up short of reaching their fourth straight South Region Championship match, falling to No. 17 West Florida if five tight sets.
The No. 17 Sailfish fell behind two set to none after dropping the first two sets, 28-26 and 25-19. The 'Fish bounced back to take the third 25-22 and the fourth 25-18 before the Argos won the fifth set 15-13.
The 'Fish led throughout most of the first set, including late leads of 21-17 and 23-21. PBA had their lone chance at set point at 26-25 after a block from Sarah Kimmey and Jazz Schmidt but the Argos scored the final three points to take the 1-0 advantage.
After dropping the second set the Sailfish stayed alive in the third as they held West Florida to a .075 attack percentage. PBA finished with 13 team blocks with Maddie Span's seven leading the way. PBA scored the first five points of the fourth and led 20-10 before the Argos made up most of the difference late.
In the fifth and deciding set the Argos took an 11-7 lead before PBA called a timeout. After the timeout the 'Fish scored three straight as Ally Rohn recorded two of her match-high 23 kills. After falling behind 13-11, Rohn added another kill and Span collected one to tie it at 13-13. West Florida responded with two kills of their own to win the match and advance to the South Region Championship.
In addition to Rohn's 23 kills, she added 22 digs and two aces. She hit .283 as the team hit just .206 for the match. Schmidt was also in double figures with 10 kills and added five digs and two blocks. Kimmey and Span both had nine kills with Raegan Grooms adding eight. Kimmey also added six blocks.
Molly Burkhardt recorded a season-high 54 assists to go along with 20 digs, four blocks and five kills. Lilly Turner added 18 digs.
The Sailfish close the season at 26-4 with the senior class of Amy Schatzmann, Sarah Kimmey, Susie Forbes, Abby Palkert and Lauren Alberti finishing their careers with a record of 119-17.
