Sailfish Knock Off First-Place Fighting Knights 2-1

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team snapped a five-match losing streak on Wednesday night, defeating Palm Beach County rival Lynn University by a 2-1 score line. The Knights were tied for first atop the Sunshine State Conference standings entering the match, but were upended by the Sailfish for the third consecutive season.

Their first conference win of the season takes PBA to a 2-5 record, 1-3 in conference, and also ends a run of four straight losses by one goal. Lynn falls to 5-4, while taking their first loss of the conference schedule.

The Sailfish opened the match quickly, putting plenty of pressure on the back line of the Knights. The opening goal for PBA came after just five minutes had passed in the match when a Sydney Jimenez shot was saved by the Lynn keeper and rebounded to Taylor Frizen, who was there to give the 'Fish the 1-0 lead.

The 'Fish got their second of the night 32 minutes into the match. A foul in Lynn territory gave PBA a free kick in a prime position. Kayla Fisher stepped up to take it and slotted it home to double the lead.

Lynn came out motivated in the second half, applying a healthy amount of pressure and getting some chances.  The Fighting Knights put the pressure on late as they cut the lead to one in the 82nd minute after a header from Anna Shawley, but PBA's solid defense was able to ride out the rest of the match to earn the victory.

"I'm extremely happy for the team, we have been on the other end of some tough losses this season," said PBA head coach Chris Gnehm. "It feels great to see this team persevere, come out tonight playing great soccer, and get the result we have been working so hard for."

PBA will look to continue their momentum as they take on Rollins on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
