Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The Sailfish improved to 5-2 on the season with a pair of 3-0 sweeps in the final day of the USC Aiken Invitational on Saturday. The ‘Fish took down Lander in straight sets before dispatching Fayetteville State in three sets as well.
The Sailfish return to action on Friday, September 18 against Lynn University in Boca Raton at 7 p.m.
PBA 3, Lander 0
Palm Beach Atlantic hit .239 – including a .375 attack in the third set – as Lander struggled to a .061 attack in a 3-0 sweep of the Bearcats. Sarah Ragland led a balanced attack with 10 kills and a .333 attack as five players recorded at least seven kills in the match.
While Ragland led the way for the match it was Emma Ballantyne who led the charge in the first set. The junior led all players with five kills in the opening set including three in a five point stretch to help the ‘Fish grab a 20-15 lead after a 14-14 tie. Ballantyne finished the match with seven kills and zero errors on 14 attempts. She also tied for the team lead with three block assists.
The Sailfish racked up 19 kills in the second set as Ragland picked up six in the frame. Stephany Brown added five and Faith Rohn chipped in with four. Brown finished the match with eight kills on 21 attacks while Rohn tallied nine kills.
Lander tied the set at 18-18 on a kill from Khiani Kelly but a four-point run by the Sailfish, bookended by kills from Jen Cook and Brown, gave PBA breathing room down the stretch.
Ally Rohn just missed out on another triple-double with nine kills, 21 assists and 16 digs. Five of her kills came in the final set as PBA scored nine of the first 10 points and led 18-5 at one point en route to their biggest margin of victory on the season.
The defense was led by Rachael Holehouse’s 23 digs, her season-high in a three-set match. Faith Rohn added 10 digs as the team tallied 75 in the match. Holehouse recorded 10 digs alone in the first set and another nine in the second to helping out the offense who hit .216 and .186 in the first two sets. PBA rebounded to hit a robust .375 in the third. Lander struggled to get the ball to the floor with just 28 kills on 131 attempts. Alexandra Roberts added 19 assists to go along with Ally Rohn’s 21 as the team recorded 43 assists on 47 kills.
PBA 3, Fayetteville State 0
The Sailfish carried their momentum from the first match into the second, overpowering Fayetteville State 25-7, 25-8, 25-22. PBA hit .329 for the match including an impressive .545 clip in the second set where they produced 13 kills on 22 attacks. The team hit .368 in the first set with 10 kills on 19 attacks. They combined for just four errors in those two sets.
Fifteen players saw the court in this one as nine registered a kill. Sarah Ragland led the team with eight kills and four total blocks. Emma Ballantyne added seven kills while Stephany Brown recorded six kills and four total blocks.
Rachael Holehouse – who was named to the all-tournament team led the defense with 10 digs. Faith Rohn was also named to the all-tournament team had three kills on seven swings and also added three service aces. The team had 15 aces in the match as Emma Ballantyne and Susie Forbes joined Rohn with three each. Overall, seven ‘Fish registered an ace in the match. Amy Schatzmann led the team with nine assists.
