Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The No. 18 Sailfish rebounded after seeing their seven-match win streak snapped last weekend with a shutout, 3-0, win over Embry-Riddle in a battle of Sunshine State Conference provisional members on Friday night in Rubin Arena.
The ‘Fish (11-3) came out firing on all cylinders in the first, taking the set in dominating fashion 25-13. PBA hit an impressive .393 during the set with 14 kills and three errors. The team finished the match with exactly 14 kills in all three sets, hitting .275 along the way while the Eagles (10-4) hit just .008. The ‘Fish were tested in the second set but pulled out a 25-22 win before finishing off the Eagles in the third 25-19.
Five players recorded at least two kills in the first set as the Sailfish were led by Faith Rohn who produced four of her match-high 15 kills in the first. PBA trailed early in the set at 4-3 but used a 5-0 run with Rachael Holehouse serving to take an 8-4 lead. Later in the set the ‘Fish pulled away – again with Holehouse behind the service line – scoring nine straight to get the ‘Fish to set point at 24-12 as four different players produced four kills during the run.
Things were more interesting in the second set as the Eagles started off with a quick 3-1 lead. The lead grew to four at 9-5 after four straight points from the Eagles as Embry-Riddle led until PBA tied it at 22-22 on a kill by Rohn, one of four in the set for the senior. After a point for the Eagles, Rohn answered with another kill before the Eagles committed errors on the final two plays to give the Sailfish the set win. The play at the net proved to be key for the Sailfish in the set as Stephany Brown collected three block assists with Emma Ballantyne adding two and Sarah Ragland one.
In the third PBA bounced back from a .159 hitting percentage in the second to hit .324 in the final set. PBA never trailed in the set and pushed the lead out to six on three occasions. Faith Rohn had seven of the team’s 14 kills including the final two points, hitting .389 in the set. Ragland added three kills as did Brown.
Ragland finished with eight kills on 11 attacks and zero errors, good for a .727 hitting percentage. Abby Palkert added seven kills on 14 swings, hitting .429. Stephany Brown finished with six kills and six block assists while Emma Ballantyne added four kills and six block assists.
Rachael Holehouse led the floor defense with 15 digs and also added nine assists and had the team’s lone service ace. Susie Forbes added 12 digs for the team and Ally Rohn recorded 14 digs and 20 assists, notching her team-leading 10th double-double of the season. Alexandra Roberts added 12 assists and six digs.
These two teams will meet again in Daytona Beach on Nov. 14.
The Sailfish will host Rollins College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
