Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball improved to 10-0 with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Palm Beach County rival Lynn University on Tuesday evening from the DeHornle Center.

After winning the first set 25-19, the Fighting Knights fought back to win 25-19 in set two. The Sailfish rolled to a 25-16 victory in the third set and then battled back from a 22-18 deficit in the finale to win 25-23.

It was a back-and-forth match from the beginning, with the Knights and ‘Fish trading blows the entire first set. With the score tied 10-10, PBA rattled off three straight points and would slowly build on their lead the rest of the way.  Faith Rohn was just beginning what would end up being a great night, getting four kills in the set on 10 attempts with no errors.

Palm Beach Atlantic fell behind big in the second set, at one point trailing 10-4 and even facing a deficit as large as eight at 16-8. The Sailfish would battle back however, cutting the lead to just four points at 21-17. Lynn would recover from the PBA counterpunch, however, and go on to wrap up the second set while holding the ‘Fish to a meager .161 attack percentage.

With the match’s momentum hanging in the balance, Palm Beach Atlantic came out and grabbed firm control of the situation with the third set. Even though their final attack percentage was .263, they rolled to the set victory behind Rohn’s six kills and Emma Ballantyne’s four.

The fourth and final set was another doozy, with Lynn at one point stretching out a four point lead at 22-18. Rohn rifled back-to-back kills to bring the set within two when the Knights called a timeout. With senior setter Becca Acevedo at the service line the Sailfish rallied off five straight points to come from behind and bring home the victory.

Acevedo continued her strong play early in the season, racking up 53 assists while also totaling 12 digs, two kills and two aces. Rohn finished the game with a match-high 25 kills and also added 12 digs and two services aces. Sophomore Katie Ballantyne, who had the final kill of the match, finished with 11 kills, while Emma Ballantyne and freshman Sarah Ragland each added eight. Libero Rachael Holehouse was busy yet again, accumulating 20 digs.

It’s a short turnaround for the Sailfish as they play host to crosstown rival Northwood University on Wednesday night in the Rubin Arena beginning at 7 PM.
