WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – On a night in which No. 21 Palm Beach Atlantic paid tribute to their two senior stars, the Sailfish came out and defeated Saint Leo University 3-1 in the final game at the Rubin Arena for the 2014 season.

In Becca Acevedo and Melissa Buckingham’s swansong, both reached historic milestones for Palm Beach Atlantic. With her 46 assists Acevedo became just the fourth player in PBA history to reach the 5,000 assist plateau, while Buckingham’s six digs put her past the 1,800 mark and within striking distance of the number two spot on the all-time digs list.

PBA jumped ahead in the match with a first set victory, 25-19, riding Faith Rohn’s five kills and .400 attack percentage to the victory. The team hit .275 overall, as Sarah Ragland attacked at a .429 percentage and Stephany Brown chipped in three kills at a .333 mark.

Set two proved to be a struggle for the Sailfish, as the Lions came out fighting and established a strong defensive front to come away with the 25-23 victory. PBA only managed to hit .048 in the set and Saint Leo combined for four blocks. Fortunately, the home team shifted things into gear for the next set.

After trading blows for the first ten points, Saint Leo started to take a lead. With the Sailfish trailing 16-12, head coach Bob White called a time out and said the magic words to motivate the team as they came out and tied the score at 19. PBA would only allow two points the rest of the set, riding the serving prowess of Rachael Holehouse for six straight points and the 25-21 win.

The final set of the night began with the Sailfish jumping ahead and snagging an early 11-6 lead. That lead would swell to as many as eight points and finish at that tally with the 25-17 victory.

Rohn led the offense for the night with 18 kills and also chipped in 15 digs, while freshman Sarah Ragland added 14 kills and a .400 overall attack percentage. Emma Ballantyne put together a great night with seven kills, four block assists and three solo blocks.

PBA had four players finish the game with double-digit digs, with Holehouse leading the way with 21. Acevedo had 12 digs and Lauren Alberti put up 11 to join Rohn’s 15.

Saturday afternoon marks Palm Beach Atlantic’s 2014 regular-season finale as they travel to St. Petersburg to take on Eckerd College at 2 pm.
