Valentine's Career Day Not Enough as Sailfish Season Comes to a Close at Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- Senior Dante Valentine saw his playing career close on a high note Saturday as the Atlanta, Georgia native poured in a career-high of 30 points versus Eckerd College in what turned out to a be lopsided ending as to the tune of an 84-61 Tritons victory. The loss puts a finishing touch on the Sailfish men’s basketball season for 2012-13.

Valentine collected nearly 50 percent of his teams’ points on Saturday with the shooting guard pouring in his career output on 10-of-22 shooting from the floor and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. He also added in four assists and four steals as he will finish out his career third all-time in program history in career steals.

Only one other Sailfish player finished in double-figures on the day with senior Nate Vera putting a final stamp on his career as well with 11 points including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Marcus Hardy finished with a near double-double of eight points and 10 rebounds while Jahvah Braswell chipped in six points and seven boards.

Eckerd saw four players reach double-figures including a game-high 21 points from guard Alex Bodney. Bodney poured in 16 points in the first-half as he led EC out to a 38-34 advantage at the break.

The Tritons (17-6) held a marginal lead throughout the first-half before opening up a sizable lead in the second stanza.

They wasted little time in extending their advantage as they led by as many as 28 points in the second-half. EC shot 56.3-percent (18-32) in the second-half to shake off a six-point halftime lead.

Eckerd held a 43-34 advantage in rebounding while PBA was forced into 14 turnovers compared to 13 turnovers for the Tritons.
