WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish volleyball team wrapped up the annual Pepsi Bash at the Beach Tournament in dominating fashion on Saturday afternoon as they claimed two 3-0 sweeps over the likes of Claflin University and Georgia Regents University-Augusta. The pair of wins gives the ‘Fish a perfect 4-0 tournament mark while improving their season record to 16-3.

The four wins this weekend pushes the Sailfish overall win streak to six matches while dropping just one set over that time frame following a rare two-match losing streak.

Palm Beach Atlantic saw two of its team members named to the Pepsi Bash at the Beach All-Tournament team as senior Christina Alessi was joined by junior Melissa Buckingham on the six-member post-tournament listing.

Match One (PBA vs. Claflin University)

Hosting the Panthers (10-14) for the seconds straight season at the Pepsi Bash the Sailfish needed little time to put away a victory as they claimed set wins of 25-14, 25-8 and 25-14 while playing a total of 13 players from their roster.

The big front-line trio of Alessi, Emma Ballantyne and Stephany Brown could simply not be stopped as they combined to put home 29 kills on just 47 combined attacks. Alessi was nearly perfect for the match as she connected for 14 kills on 20 total attacks for an eye-popping .650 hitting percentage. Ballantyne and Brown were nearly as dominant as they tallied nine and six kills respectively.

Sophomores Faith Rohn and Elly Raush also contributed solid showings to the offense with six and five kills each with Rohn adding in nine digs.

Rachael Holehouse began what would be a big day on defense with a team-best 17 digs in the match while Buckingham added in 15 defensive helpers.

Becca Acevedo came away with another strong performance at setter with 42 assists while chipping in six digs.

Match Two (PBA vs. GRU-Augusta)

The final match of the tournament featured arguably the two best teams as the Sailfish would host GRU-Augusta (formerly Augusta State University) for the tournament finale.

Although the ‘Fish were certainly aware of their opponents talent it wouldn’t turn out to be a potential upset as PBA reeled off 25-13, 25-15 and 25-19 wins to close out the Jaguars.

Acevedo once again guided the offense with 32 assists as four PBA players had at least six kills including a match-best 10 kills by Rohn.

Alessi added in nine kills on just 16 attacks (.438 attacking percentage) while Buckingham posted 10 digs and Holehouse had nine digs.

The Jags were paced by Kristen Koch’s 10 kills as they were limited to just a .022 team hitting percentage overall.

Palm Beach Atlantic will travel to Melbourne, Fla. on Tuesday, Oct. 16th to face Florida Tech for their next match. The Sailfish and Panthers will square off at 7 pm.
