WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a nearly undefeated month of September, the Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team began October in similar fashion on Wednesday night with a dominating 3-0 sweep of Ave Maria (Fla.) University. Moving away from NCAA South Region competition for a night, the Fish saw the full length of their roster see court time as they put home three victories over the Gyrenes.
The 3-0 victory also pushed PBA’s winning streak to 15 matches as they improve to 17-2 overall while AMU drops to 1-7. Palm Beach Atlantic rattled off strong 25-9 and 25-8 wins in the first two sets on Wednesday before coming through with a 25-17 win in the final set.
Senior Mariela Quesada blasted home nine kills in 11 attacks for an eye-popping .818 attacking percentage on the night while leading all players in kills.
Freshman Rachael Holehouse did solid work in her customary backrow position but also moved up front where she connected for a career-high six kills while sitting second on the team for the match.
A total of ten PBA players registered at least one kill on the night with Ellly Raush chipping in five kills while sophomore Kelsey Fox also produced a five spot of kills. The Sailfish connected for a .411 hitting percentage as a team as they managed 39 kills and only nine hitting errors in 73 total attacks.
Becca Acevedo put home 20 assists in just two sets of work while Melissa Buckingham kept her double-digit digs streak alive with 12 digs as performed well from the libero position once again.
Freshman Rachel Jones collected a match-high five block assists as the Fish put home a total of 14 blocks (12 block assists, 2 solo blocks) in the match.
Ave Maria was paced by five kills from Ashley St. Hubin while senior setter Megan Arago dished out 13 assists.
The Fish will have a day off before hitting the same Rubin Arena court on Friday and Saturday as they host the Pepsi Bash at the Beach Volleyball Tournament. The team will take on Lincoln Memorial University on Friday at 3 pm while squaring off against Barry University at 7 pm to round out Friday’s action. Saturday will feature a 12 pm showdown with Claflin University and a 4 pm match against Bentley University. All four matches will be broadcast on the Sailfish Sports Network.
