WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- As the regular season winds down the Sailfish volleyball team continues to pile up key regional victories as they look to enhance their resume for a possible first-time bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament. Their resume received another significant boost on Wednesday night at the Rubin Arena when the Sailfish utilized a strong serve and balanced offensive attack to down Flagler College by a 3-1 score while also securing a season sweep over the always-strong Saints program.
Both previous victories over Flagler, first at the USC-Aiken Invitational and once more in St. Augustine, Florida it would be PBA and Flagler needing five sets to settle the score. Tonight’s action did feature a third straight come-from-behind effort by PBA however the Fish were able to win in four sets.
Flagler (15-7) tallied a solid 25-21 win in the first set behind a .433 hitting percentage as they tallied 14 kills and only one hitting error in 30 attacks.
From there it was nearly all PBA.
The Sailfish (27-3) stormed back with a dominant 25-13 game two win as the Fish blasted home a match-high .464 hitting percentage as they posted 17 kills and only four hitting errors in 28 total attempts.
Although the third set would see Flagler hold the edge in hitting percentage with a .323 mark compared to only .200 for PBA, the two team’s service efforts would begin to really go PBA’s way. The Fish prevailed 25-21 before cruising to a 25-13 win in the final set to clinch a 3-1 win.
The difference in the match certainly came at the service line with PBA connecting for 12 aces with seven errors while Flagler managed only three aces and 14 service errors.
PBA was paced by a strong showing from redshirt freshman Elly Raush who did much of her damage in the first three sets. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania native pounded out a career-high of 14 kills on the night while doing so on 29 attacks for a solid .241 hitting percentage.
Senior Mariela Quesada shook off a slow start to collect 14 kills of her own while finishing with a double-double of 10 digs. Faith Rohn added in 10 kills while hitting .500 on the night as she did her solid work on only 18 attacks.
Melissa Buckingham and Rachael Holehouse led a determined backline for PBA as each tallied 16 digs to lead the team. Becca Acevedo was superb again from the setter position with 48 assists and nine digs as well.
Rachel Jones led all PBA players with three block assists.
Flagler was paced by 13 kills from Emilee Taylor while libero Casey Gnann had a team-high 15 digs. Amelia Morgan managed 32 assists and seven digs in the loss.
Palm Beach Atlantic will have off until October 24th when they will travel to Ave Maria University for a 7 pm match.
