FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- The Sailfish volleyball team made fairly quick work of both NCAA South Region opponents they faced on Saturday as PBA participated in the South Region Crossover hosted by Nova Southeastern University at the Don Taft University Center. The Sailfish defeated the University of West Alabama in an early afternoon match by a score of 3-1 then came back to sweep the host Sharks 3-0 in the nightcap.
The victories for PBA improves their season record to an impressive 26-3 while the team was able to pile up two more key in-region victories in their quest for a NCAA postseason tournament bid.
Match One (PBA vs. University of West Alabama)
The day’s first match turned into the Quesada and Rohn Show with senior Mariela Quesada and freshman Faith Rohn each tallying 16 kills in a four-set win over the Tigers.
The Sailfish came out firing with a .424 team hitting percentage in the first set and earned a win of 25-16 thanks to 17 kills and only three hitting errors for the set. The Tigers would answer however and limit PBA to only a .152 hitting mark in set two as they evened the match with a 25-23 win.
Now facing a bit of pressure, the Sailfish would turn it back on as they claimed 25-19 and 25-15 wins in the final two sets to hand UWA 3-1 loss.
Quesada did her good work on only 34 swings with just one hitting error for a spectacular .441 hitting percentage while Rohn was nearly as efficient with 16 kills on only 37 attacks with just two errors for a .378 hitting percentage. Both players also registered eight digs in the four sets.
Freshman Rachel Jones added in seven kills as the PBA trio combined to account for all but nine kills for the Sailfish in the match.
Becca Acevedo provided a solid showing near her hometown of Miami, Florida with 37 assists in the win while producing three service aces, three digs and three block assists.
Melissa Buckingham tallied 20 digs to lead all players in the match while adding in a pair of service aces as well.
West Alabama was paced by Sadie Seam who produced a match-high 21 kills on a .286 hitting percentage.
Match Two (PBA vs. Nova Southeastern University)
The Sailfish hoped to claim the season series over NSU on Saturday after defeating the Sharks 3-0 at the Rubin Arena back on September 12th.
It would once again take a solid showing by the Fish but they posted another sweep of the Sharks who dropped to 4-20 on the season with the loss.
PBA would close out their weekend with set victories of 25-19, 25-21 and 26-24 over NSU.
Quesada and Rohn once again led the way for PBA with Quesda claiming a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs while Rohn managed 12 kills and seven digs. Jones and fellow freshman Elly Raush each posted six kills in the win.
Acevedo was superb again from the setter position as she dished out 39 assists while freshman Rachael Holehouse led all PBA players with 11 digs. Buckingham added in 10 digs.
Sydney Cook led all Sharks players with 10 kills while Paige Boivin registered 19 digs to lead all players in the match.
PBA will host only one match next week when they welcome in Flagler College on Wednesday, October 24th for a 7 pm showdown at the Rubin Arena. The Saints will be hungry for a victory as the Sailfish have defeated them twice this season by a tight 3-2 score.
