Sailfish Make a Big Splash with Blowout Win in the Rubin Arena

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After winning eight of their first nine matches all on the road, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team finally unveiled their 2011 team in front of the home crowd on Wednesday evening at the Rubin Arena versus Ave Maria University. The young Gyrenes side wouldn’t have enough to challenge the Fish as PBA cruised to a 3-0 win to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Freshman setter Becca Acevedo started the first set in grand style as she served 14 straight points for the Blue and White before a side out for the Lady Gyrenes who drop to 2-4 on the season.

Acevedo would live up to her name throughout the dominating stretch as she supplied the Fish with five service aces as Palm Beach Atlantic would go on to win the opening set by a 25-7 score. The team hit a match-high .455 as they totaled 12 kills and only two errors in the dominating opening set.

Set number two produced a 25-13 final tally as the Sailfish began inserting some of their reserves into the lineup. PBA closed out the sweep with a 25-8 showing in set three as they once again topped the .300 attack mark with a .308 attacking percentage as they produced 10 kills and two errors.

Acevedo finished with 26 assists in the win while adding in nine digs, six aces, and three block assists.

Sophomore Christina Alessi continued to play an efficient brand of volleyball as she led all hitters with eight kills while only making 11 attacks with no errors for an eye-popping .727 attacking percentage.

Lisa Jedlicka continues to play more consistently and explosive as she added in seven kills (.294 attacking percentage) while Mariela Quesada and Lanae Robinson each added in four kills.

Melissa McPeek continued to be active as the team’s starting libero with a match-high 16 digs while Quesada also reached double-digits with 11 digs. Robinson led all players with five block assists.

Hayley Wonka led all AMU players with five kills while junior Megan Arago finished with 10 assists.

PBA will be back on their home floor again on Friday, September 16th as they will battle Southeastern University at 7 pm in the Rubin Arena. Those that cannot make it out to see the match in person can follow the action live through a broadcast provided by the Sailfish Sports Network.
